Everyone is gearing up for St. Paddy’s Day, stocking up on green gear and planning their weekend. But for us, the connection to Northern Ireland goes a lot deeper than a pint of Guinness. It’s written into our DNA, and it’s the reason this shop exists in the first place.

The Legend of Limavady

If you’ve ever wondered about the "why" behind the Little Chief & Co. name, you have to look back to the 5th century in a town called Limavady, in Northern Ireland.

In Irish Gaelic, Limavady translates to Leim an Mhadaidh, or “The Leap of the Dog.” Legend tells of a faithful wolfhound who leapt across the River Roe to warn his chieftain of an impending ambush. He sacrificed himself to save his leader, leaving a mark on history that tied the town’s name to a dog’s bravery forever. That kind of fierce, unwavering loyalty isn't just a story to us; it’s a heavy legacy to live up to.

From Derry to St. Catharines

This isn’t just folklore we found in a book. It’s personal.

Our founders' grandparents were raised in that very area, the Limavady/Derry region. The photo you see above captures that old-world grit and the deep-seated respect for the bond between humans and their dogs that we grew up with.

When we started Little Chief & Co., we didn't want to just "open a retail store." We wanted to build a brand that actually honoured that spirit. My grandparents didn’t cut corners, and because of them, neither do we.

The Story Behind the Black Clover

You’ve likely noticed the black 3-leaf clover in our Little Chief & Co. logo. Most clovers you see this time of year are bright green and whimsical, but ours is different for a reason. ☘️

We chose a black clover to reflect the grit, the history, and the strength of the lineage we come from. It’s a visual anchor for the "Leap of the Dog", a reminder of a bond that is forged in loyalty and tempered by bravery.

When you see that clover on our bags or our storefront, it’s our seal of approval. It’s a promise that the product inside has been vetted with the same honesty and intentionality that our family brought to everything they did in Derry. It’s not just a logo; it’s our standard.
