#PetsAreEssential Tax Holiday: Supporting the Call for Change

At Little Chief & Co., we’ve always believed that our pets are more than just companions—they’re family. From providing emotional support to encouraging physical activity, cats and dogs play a vital role in our lives, offering love, companionship, and health benefits. That’s why we firmly believe that pet food should be classified as essential and exempt from sales tax.

Despite efforts and advocacy, such as those from Pets Canada, no meaningful changes have been made to exempt cat and dog food from federal or provincial sales taxes. This is a stance we’ve championed since the early days of the COVID pandemic when it became glaringly clear how essential pets are to mental and emotional well-being.

To stand in solidarity with this cause, Little Chief & Co. is launching our own #PetsAreEssential Tax Holiday. From December 14th to February 15th, we’re offering a 13% discount in-store on most cat and dog food, effectively covering the taxes ourselves. This discount applies exclusively to these products because we believe no pet parent should feel financially burdened for providing the basics to their furry family members.

We are proud to support Pets Canada in their efforts to lobby for this essential change, but we urge the Federal and Provincial Governments to take concrete action.
